Does DM have a mission statement?

Post by msnobody »

If so, what is the mission of DM, and how well is DM meeting this mission goal? Sometimes I think the mission of any organization may have to realign based on changing times. I may be mistaken, but it originally seemed to me that taking on the mopologists head to head was at the forefront back in the day. Times have changed.

I’ll take a stab.

DM doesn’t appear to have an official mission statement, but how it functions in practice seems to reflect 2-3 unintentional lines of effort—LOE 1: Vigorous engagement with broader political or cultural questions intersecting with religion; LOE 2: Sustained critique of LDS truth claims and authority; and LOE 3: Open-ended philosophical discussion that is sometimes underpinned by cultural assumptions.

The center of gravity tends to be deconstruction—particularly with respect to LDS authority and truth claims—while reconstruction or ongoing belief is permitted but tends to carry an expectation of rigorous defense as a cultural norm.

It’s probably more accurate to call these cultural norms than a mission.

The mission of DiscussMormonism.com is for you to be entertained through the medium of discussing Mormonism.

If you are entertained during your time here, then this message board is fulfilling its purpose. If you aren't, then it isn't (in your particular case).

It really is that simple. There's nothing more to it than that. At all.

It is getting your grammar correct, but that’s in the fine print.

I guess not having a mission statement is much better than the Interpreter Foundation or Ward Radio's mission statements:

The board is fulfilling it’s mission for me. So thank you Shades, I appreciate you for developing the board and for putting up with me.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

Well, at least that explains the need for UR 13.
