Latter-day Saints are increasingly Pro-Trump more than Pro-Republican.

Post by I Have Questions »

There’s a couple of eye opening snippets in this article. This one caught my eye…
While young Latter-day Saint voters appear less eager to lump themselves in with the Republican tribe, Cooperative Election Study data shows that they have actually become more open to supporting President Donald Trump, and retain many policy stances of older generations.

In 2016, only 38% of Latter-day Saint voters supported Trump. This fell to just 31% in 2020. But 2024 saw a 25-point swing in favor of the GOP nominee, with 56% of older Gen Z and younger millennial Latter-day Saints supporting Trump, the survey found.

This implies that most self-described independents among young Latter-day Saints returned to their Republican roots on Election Day, according to Burge, as 63% of Latter-day Saints ages 36-50 and three-quarters of Latter-day Saints over 50 supported Trump.
I’m not sure I agree with that conclusion. The survey doesn’t take into account that the uplift might easily be because non Trump supporting LDS no longer affiliate with, or identify as, LDS in growing numbers - more and more non Trump-leaning members are leaving the Church and so the concentration of Trump-leaning members increases. Whatever the reason though, the SLC LDS active and identifying membership in America is very pro Trump, and that LDS population is becoming more Trumpist as the years progress.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

What’s troubling isn’t just the voting pattern, but the moral signal it sends. When a faith centered on integrity, humility, and accountability (assuming the leaders mean what they say in General Conference that is), increasingly aligns itself with a figure who violates those norms openly, people will reasonably question whether doctrine is shaping politics anymore, or whether politics is reshaping doctrine. I simply cannot fathom anyone who is pro-Trump being able to go to the temple worthily while upholding his gross immorality and lack of empathy, love or care for anyone other than his own important big self, but that's just me. Perhaps even it has caved to the orange blob. The utter silence of church leadership on this is deafening.

What choice do they have? Go Democrat?

People generally vote for the candidates that most closely align with their policy views. JFK wasn't pristine by a long shot. Bill Clinton? Not hardly. Hillary Clinton? Don't get me started. Ad nauseam. Politicians aren't running for Messiah.

P.S. the Democrat party essentially created Trump. Think about it.

P.P.S. I'm not a Trumpist.

This is a great blame shifting tactic.

I suppose we should have tried Woodrow Wilson at the Nuremberg Trials.

This is not an example of blame shifting. Guilty parties do that. I didn't vote for Trump. But if someone would have put a gun to my head and insisted I vote for Trump or Harris, I would have gone with Trump. Lesser of two evils.

The Democrats ran a sucky candidate that was too far to the left and too much of an idiot. Too scripted and obvious incompetent. Too many people were tired of Biden/Harris. The Democrats cyncically blocked a reasonably moderate candidate: RFKjr. There were others better than Harris. This is why you got Trump. Do better next time.

Good point. Bill, are you one of these "Liberal's burden" types?

I wonder who is willing to weather an F&T meeting to see how many Trumpimonies will be borne.
