I’d love for an apologist to put forward the idea that they didn’t. Because they are then saying that the First Presidency cannot be trusted to seek God’s input into the big decisions affecting Church policy. It opens the door to the last two hundred years of Mormonism being simply men cosplaying the role of Prophets and conning the members.

Either the First Presidency cannot be trusted to seek God’s input into the big decisions, or the First Presidency does not want God’s input into the big decisions in case it conflicts with their preferences, following the principle that if you don't like the answer, you shouldn't have asked the question.

There isn't a scenario now, in a post-SEC Investigation Mormonism, that one can state categorically that the First Presidency is worthy of trust. They've shown, across the last two sets of men in the First Presidency (and the Presiding Bishoprics for that matter), that they cannot be trusted to make morally proper decisions even on really big matters. We know for a fact that they are prepared to be dishonest. And that's that.
