Indeed yes. To repeat: I am not American. I don't want to be American. But the ability to create new and good stuff from things brought to America from other cultures is a good thing, and one of the things I like and admire about America.

Anybody who tries to halt that process is, well, un-American, or so it seems to me.

I probably wouldn't have posted this if not for Res' hat thread in Terrestrial. It's more relevant to that thread but with a political cousin to the person Res got to know. This thread seems like as good as any spot for it as it does provide an answer as to what's wrong with America. And you guessed it, it's a certain kind of person. Who was it that said stupid people are a greater threat than bad people?

I was in a situation today where I needed Lyft. About a 25 minute drive. I rarely use it and was surprised that my latest credit card is even linked. The guy picks me up. Older guy, 70s, super friendly. Can't help but not like him. He's giving me a bunch of life advice and generally entertaining. He's got a thick Eastern European accent. During brief lulls in the conversation, I realized he was listening to right-wing radio of some variety. I figured it probably fit, given in course of the conversation he revealed he had a chronic gambling habit that he was only recently making headway with. Now, nothing indicated he was Christian, so that's why I'm posting it here instead of Res' thread. I would guess that no, he isn't. Anyway, he was talking about retirement and how he started social security at age 62. I joked that there probably wouldn't be social security by the time I retired and he snapped back immediately about how good I'm going to have it because of "all the money from tariffs". So I start laughing because people can be stupid and entertaining at the same time. I blew that off and didn't challenge it, in part because of the language barrier, and generally I don't get into it. If I'm at my worst, I'll bait for further stupidity or I'll agree and take on an even dumber position of the same variety for myself.

Shortly thereafter, he led into it again by noting that the prices of cars are plummeting. Honestly, I haven't looked at car prices in months, and I really have no idea where they're at. I asked where he was getting his information from, how does he know prices are plummeting? He responded that because of tariffs, they're bringing back manufacturing to the US. I said that was interesting, but I wanted to know where he was getting his price data from to say that prices are falling. He said from his own recent experience shopping for cars, as he'd just bought the very car I was riding in a few months ago. He explained that the POS we were riding in is 65,000$ new, which he said is outrageous, but at CarMax, he found the same car with low miles on it for 35,000$. That was getting close to the end of the ride and I don't have Res' talent for asking good questions in real time anyway, I wouldn't have known where to go from there.

I momentarily considered not tipping and complaining about his political radio, just to let people know their one-way freeway isn't universally appreciated, but I ended up giving the max tip because it's just so hopeless.

But, here's my answer, what's wrong with America is people actually support things like tariffs because they bring the price of new cars down, which is evidenced by the outrageous prices of new cars but you can get a much better deal on a used car if you look around hard enough.

Or that Elon Musk sent prefilled ballots to voters in Georgia (that’s called RIGGING THE ELECTION for some of the dumber conservatives on the board), or that Musk was allowed to spend $25 million on a PAC using Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s likeness to push anti-abortion messaging to swing state voters, lying about her actual positions on abortion, and didn’t file the requisite paperwork identifying himself as the sole donator to the PAC until after the election, which is illegal. And he suffers no consequences for it. That’s called RIGGING THE ELECTION for the dumber conservatives board members.

Do you dumb "F"s have any idea the damage your party is doing to the long-term health of our democracy? Do you even care? I could explain to you until I’m blue in the face that authoritarianism never ends well for anyone. That the damage you think you’re doing to others will find you, too. And will you snap out of it? Nope.
