My wife and I are both German professors who were born in Canada. We lived in the United States for some years and our children were born there.
I can't understand any national allegiance as morally valid if it is of the form, "I support my country whether it is right or wrong." I don't believe that that even really supports any country. So it just doesn't make sense.
I think that anyone who was born anywhere ought to be allowed to support the country of their birth in doing or being right, as a country. Everyone, regardless of where they were born, ought to support all countries in doing right. People who were born in one country, or who otherwise owe special allegenience to any one country, should especially support their country of birth or special allegiance, in doing whatever is right. No-one ever has any valid obligation to support a country in wrong. That doesn't even really support the country in question.
I'm a physics guy. so I believe in determinism. What should be is what will be, eventually. It's only a matter of time. The time scales may just be long.
So that's the thing: whatever you decide will be part of what will be. What you decide really matters. You'd better decide for the right.

Your belief that one should support one's country doing right and not jingoistically support it when it commits genocide, wages illegal wars, builds concentration camps, and dispatches secret police thugs to shoot peaceful citizens in the face and the back is what makes you a radical leftist Marxist pinko commie, according to HoH.
Conservatives such as HoH believe that patriotism requires you to salute the flag and obey the authorities, even as they are firing up the ovens and burying people in mass graves.
