The US is led by a closed clique of Trump loyalists who did not realise that closing the strait of Hormuz was an obvious and easily executed retaliation tactic for the Iranians? Lord help the US, and the rest of us too.

The 'closed clique' point is an important one: Trump does not like to hear the advice of people who might tell him inconvenient things. So he no longer takes the expert advice of military experts before launching actions of the kind he launched on Iran. Since his first term we already knew that he does not read briefing papers, and prefers short word of mouth - but his 'nobody expected this' claim shows that he is now getting NO direct advice from the US military.

And he is the commander in chief. Doesn't look good, does it?

It is becoming glaringly obvious that the greatest beneficiary of Trump's illegal and unconstitutional war against Iran is most probably Russia. Russia is profiting hugely from increased prices of the oil and natural gas that they export. Plus, Russia is openly on Iran's side, by providing material benefits, weapons and intelligence to Iran's regime and helping them target and attack American forces in the region, not to mention also using those profits to help fund their criminal war in Ukraine. Despite all this, Trump is reducing or eliminating sanctions on Russia intended to punish them for invading Ukraine, and unbelievably also reducing sanctions on Iran! In addition to all this, the Trump administration is cozying up to Hungary's Victor Orban, another authoritarian despot who traitorously sides with Putin, despite heading a country supposedly a member of NATO! Trump apparently doesn't know or care how much this weakens our nation and damages our reputation and respect for us by our strongest allies and friends. We have become a laughingstock and/or a Pariah to many, if not most, of the other countries of the world, both friend and foe, especially our foes!
