Well it's beautiful. I read that a Blue Moon isn't actually blue. It's a micromoon that is (don't quote me on this) the smallest moon and it happens approx. every 2.5 years. Thus the phrase, once in a Blue Moon. I think the piece I read also stated that blue moons happen twice in a month? Not sure now though there were two available this month.

Also read a bunch of information about Blue Moons that I don't understand. I suppose I could take my time to understand but the truth is I'm a bit lazy in that regard and I don't want to spoil my reaction to what I see in the night sky. I don't care whatever it is, is made of or necessarily why things look the way they do. I'm in it for the way the night sky blows me away and takes my breath with it.

I can distinguish stars from planets and around here, I can identify planets that I see because I learned to do so decades ago. in my opinion there's nothing like night sky viewing from high altitude. Back in Jersey you can see the night sky but it's typically hazy and so far away. At our altitude here, it's truly breathtakingly beautiful and the clarity is out of this world. No pun intended.

I went on to look for information on Super Moons viewable this year. There was one in January, will be another in November. Turns out the that biggest Super Moon available this year is on Christmas Eve. Love that!

I'm slightly ashamed to admit we subscribe to Apple TV (my only excuse is that I'm a sucker for my wife's desires). We've had the subscription for a few years now, and just recently I thought to myself, if we're paying for it, I should watch it too. I've only dabbled in the past. I'm not much of a TV watcher generally, but recently I've found some time on my hands, so what the hell.

Anyway, the point is that I just finished watching all 5 seasons of For All Mankind on Apple TV. If you're not familiar, it's a show based on the premise of an alternate history starting in the 60's where the USSR gets to the moon before America, and it triggers a chain of events the propels the space program forward because the US wants to be first at something else. It leads to colonizing the moon and eventually Mars.

For me, it's an easy watch. Imagining frequent and mundane travel to the moon and Mars is fun escapism. It's a lovely blend of multiple branches of science with how an active space program might affect families and real lives. Highly recommended if you're easily distracted by science fiction blended with high, gritty drama. I have to confess a love for anything Apollo Mission related. This latest season seems to be commentary on (criticism of) oligarchs. Got to love that, but it's a great show in addition to the necessary social commentary.

I mention it in this thread because, well, I like looking up.

The moon's orbit round the earth is an ellipse, not a perfect circle. So when it is further away it looks smaller than it does when it is nearer to us. OK .... so what?
