Missionary assignment room and selection process

Post by drumdude »

I thought this was an interesting look inside the selection room. It appears they now use a lot of technology to inform their decisions.

I had the strongest prompting, the strongest of the morning, that the missionary we had before us was to be assigned to Japan,” Elder Rasband said.
God sure likes to hide in the forest of coincidences doesn't he? Who was promoting Christopher Hitchens when he was inspired to write his article for Slate? The amount of hijacked human experiences and cloaking them in invisible beings prodding their human subjects is staggering.

It’s a great system. Sure, a few sexual abusers have been assigned to opportunities to gain access to potential victims this way, but those are easily explained. I’m not sure what the explanation is, and Eyring and Rasband only talk about the “hits”, but I’m sure there’s a good faith promoting explanation.
A former missionary and teacher for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) has been arrested and federally charged in the United States for sexually abusing multiple Tongan boys during his time overseas, Tongan news outlet Kaniva Tonga reported today.

William James Purdy, 28, of West Valley, Utah, was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 16 and taken into custody on July 25 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Elder Purdy was issued his missionary call by a senior Apostle using the exact process that Rasband explains in his comments noted in the OP. “I feel prompted by the spirit to send William James Purdy to Tonga, where I’m inspired to think he will do great things with the youth of the church…”

It strikes me that there is a process of grooming (or leading the witness if you prefer) going on in the way Eyring leads Rasband into saying he feels the same inspiration about where missionaries should go. And Rasband retrospectively “remembers” he felt the same inspiration that Eyring did.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.
