Post by Everybody Wang Chung »

Measles is a delightfully brutal cocktail of excruciating pain, permanent scarring, and lifelong organ damage, assuming you’re able to survive it. Good news, though, according to the CDC, Utah is currently leading the nation in measles cases, and honestly, it’s not even a contest. If only Utah had some sort of leader willing to step up to the plate and maybe, just maybe, suggest the importance of protecting the children. If only...

Everybody Wang Chung, I assume you drew this specimen from the Christopher Hitchens Memorial “How Religion Poisons Everything” File™.

The LDS Church needs a new prophet, MD.

If Hitchens was still around, he’d probably frame this one and hang it on his wall.

My guess is that intermarriage among Mormon Royalty is finally taking its toll.

You could see this anti vaccine sentiment very clearly in many Mormons who refused to follow the prophets and get vaccinated against Covid.

It seems a lot of Mormons are going their own way, synthesizing from the evangelicals and MAGA folks on their social media feeds. Mormonism in many cases takes a back seat to their political ideology.

Given the high density of per-capita Priesthood Holders resident in Utah, I’m very surprised that it isn’t the state with the lowest number of measles incidences. Have they had a shortage of consecrated oil?
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

True. Several of those types of Mormons congregate at the Hitchens Obsession Blog.

To put it mildly, if some Utahns choose to reject vaccination against measles for themselves and their children it isn’t obvious to me that the Church should be blamed for their choice. If anything, the situation is quite to the contrary: In refusing vaccination, they are acting against the clear and consistent counsel (and practice) of the Church’s leaders.
How interesting. The Church is blameless on this issue. But when it comes to (e.g.) measures of happiness, etc., where Utah looks good? Somehow *that* IS due to the Church’s influence. So, the Church’s massive influence in Utah is 100% responsible for good quality of life statistics, but the statistics on things like measles vaccinations…well, gee, what’s the Mopologetic explanation for that?

Interpreter has been all about venerating BY, right? And wasn’t the idea of Deseret to build a utopia in Utah? So what gives?
