Re: White privilege is a myth

Post by ceeboo »

Hey CP

I thought I would try bringing our ongoing PM discussion about this to the board and see how it goes (To be fair to you though - We were engaging on the topic of privilege in general and this topic is white privilege, so there is that)

So, I think this story from Hutcherson is a pretty good example of why I struggle with this whole thing.

.
More from Hutcherson -
5. When I got accepted to Harvard (as a fellow AP student, you were witness to what an academic beast I was in high school, yes?), three separate times I encountered white strangers as I prepped for my maiden trip to Cambridge that rankle to this day. The first was the white doctor giving me a physical at Kaiser:

Me: “I need to send an immunization report to my college so I can matriculate.”

Doctor: “Where are you going?”

Me: “Harvard.”

Doctor: “You mean the one in Massachusetts?”

The second was in a store, looking for supplies I needed from Harvard’s suggested “what to bring with you” list.

Store employee: “Where are you going?”

Me: “Harvard.”

Store employee: “You mean the one in Massachusetts?”

The third was at UPS, shipping off boxes of said “what to bring” to Harvard. I was in line behind a white boy mailing boxes to Princeton and in front of a white woman sending her child’s boxes to wherever.

Woman to the boy: “What college are you going to?” Boy: “Princeton.”

Woman: “Congratulations!”

Woman to me: “Where are you sending your boxes?” Me: “Harvard.”

Woman: “You mean the one in Massachusetts?”

I think: “No, bitch, the one downtown next to the liquor store.” But I say, gesturing to my LABELED boxes: “Yes, the one in Massachusetts.”
So, while it's hard to do this I know - I'm going to place myself in a similar scenario: I am at a gas station in Ohio - black guy next to me is filling up - I notice that his truck is packed with luggage and furniture - I say to him "where are you going" - He says "Harvard" - I think it's entirely possible and reasonable that I might say "You mean the one in Massachusetts?"

Why would I say this, is the question: Not because he happened to have black skin (o white skin or green skin or purple skin or because he was short or tall or skinny or obese) BUT because I thought it was very rare/impressive. How many times have you met a perfect stranger that said they were on the way to Harvard? Or Yale? Or Oxford? It's happened to me exactly zero times in my life. None. So if it did, I would be like WOW - and can certainly see myself replying to Hutcherson the same way.

And if this perfect stranger I met at the gas station in Ohio had white skin? Same as above
And if this perfect stranger I met at the gas station in Ohio had purple skin? Same as above
Tall? Same.
Short? Same.
Female? Same.
Male? Same
Old? Same.
Young? Same.
Asian? Same.
Mexican? Same.
Green eyes with a tattoo of a grilled cheese sandwich on their left cheek? Same

So is this story really about the color of Hutcherson's skin? (The 3rd example in the story is, perhaps, a little more muddy)
Then she says congratulations, but it’s too damned late. The point here is, if no one has ever questioned your intellectual capabilities or attendance at an elite institution based solely on your skin color, you have white privilege.
First, I think his thoughts of "No Bitch" in one example and "It's too damned late" in the other are a little over the top.

Is Hutcherson LOOKING (Perhaps with a magnifying glass) really really trying to find something that really isn't there?

Are we? Is a fairly large percentage of the civilized world?

If the answer is yes to any/all of those (I'm not stating it is, I am asking though) - Is that dangerous? Destructive? Divisive?

And, I am still struggling to understand the perspectives/experiences/thoughts that others have on subjects that are as complex as this one is.

Ceeboo, in respect to your extended example, if there were some other well known Harvard school that was commonly confused with the Harvard in Massachusetts, I could see your point. But there isn’t. I’m sure I’ve been asked 1000 times in my life where I went to law school. Not a single person has responded “You mean the Harvard in Massachusetts?” Had someone done so, I would have found it very odd.

I think the guy has a valid point.

I suspect it has more to do with ideology and what republicans thought of the people who were trespassing that day than the fact they were a white couple, and while I suspect the couple probably votes republican, they did milk the right to get that support they needed to get the republican governor to pardon them. I am less certain if they were a black couple that they would have been treated the same, but it is possible if they promoted themselves to republicans as the white couple did.

I think you have a good point. I think some very old stereotypes of black people still haunt us today even if for most it may be unconscious.

I’m not sure what that means, but I’m fairly certain there were a bunch of people from all walks of life and all stripes, as it were, that were marching in that neighborhood that day. So, I was curious if the white couple only pointed their weapons at black people.

I’m not sure who you mean by the guy, but it was a woman who told the Harvard story.

I think you're missing my point. What you are suggesting is precisely what my point is. I'll try again.

I understand that there was no confusion about which Harvard. I was suggesting that because it was Harvard (prestige/awesome/wow) the response was "You mean the one in Massachusetts?"

Like if I ran into a young lady at Burger King in Iowa and she told me she was landed a job at the Sistine Chapel. I might very well reply "You mean the on in Vatican City." Not because there are several of them or there was confusion but precisely because it was the Sistine Chapel.

If you were at a Burger King in Iowa, how common would this be? Thus the response seems at least reasonable to me.

by the way: I used a "lady" at the Burger King for Lem, Because we all know how critical the genitals are in the freaking story!

That's because you have white skin. (Kidding! Relax people)

I don't think you're comparing apples to apples. Let's imagine you're not a lawyer yet. You're a young lad, you live in Scottsdale Arizona, You have been accepted to Harvard Law School and you are preparing to begin your awesome journey. While still at home in AZ, you enter the Post office to mail something to Harvard. An extremely nice young Christian young man named Ceeboo strikes up a conversation with you and asks you "What are you doing here" - You reply "I am mailing something to my school, I start there next week" - Ceeboo replies "Cool, what school" - You reply "Harvard" - I reply "You mean the one in Massachusetts?" That question is born from being impressed - Like wow. I simply don't buy that the clear meaning of the question (in the story above) is something like, No way are you, someone who has black skin, smart enough to be accepted at Harvard.
I think the guy has a valid point.
Fair enough, I don't think the guy has a valid point. (Sorry again Lem - Lady!!!!!!!!!)
