Conspiracy Theories: What’s the harm?

So, what’s the harm if people want to believe that a cabal of liberal elites kidnaps children to drink their blood and secretly introduces reptilian DNA into our genes?

I just read that. My wife and I were on a morning walk and we were talking about how antivaxxers went from being on the Left side of the political spectrum - the hippie homeopathic organic types - to the Right, and that was kind of astonishing. I never would’ve imagined some on the Right falling for Lizards Running the World. It’s mind blowing.

Speaking of which, when we were hiking earlier this year we kept leap frogging this 40-something solo hiker. He was kind of ok, but also seemed to be, I dunno, a little too grounded in being outdoors and taking in the nature. I don’t know how to explain the signals a hiker gives you when they’re off, but he, his name was Chris, was just a little off. Well, we made it to a hostel just off the trail and this dude comes in a little later. The lady who runs the hostel, “Mountain Mama”, happened to have a LOT of weed on hand. Literally dozens of jars full of bud. She offered it up freely, which was great for Chris and my wife since they smoke it.

So, he’s teaching her how to roll weed into blunts and spliffs and whatever, and they’re smoking and they get to talking. There were half a dozen of us sitting around the table hanging out. This dude out of nowhere begins to talk about lizard people, his eyes got really wide when doing so, and he became kind of agitated. I was like, “What the “F” is happening right now?” So, after a few minutes of that I give her the look, she walks over to me, and I’m like, “We’re bumping because this dude is nuts, and I don’t want to run into him again.” I think we pulled an 18-miler the next day.

So, yeah.

Also, one of my former neighbors was a Qonspiracy guy and he was bananas. So, it seems to me that the Qult has a healthy dose of crazies in its ranks.

There always was an antivax right, but left certainly predominated. It was interesting to see the antivaxers hook up with the anti-governmennt right. I think they were brought together over masks. At least, that's what I observed here. I read Daily Kos to see what the left is talking about. They have flat rule against posting conspiracy theories. No vaccines or GMO conspiracy propaganda allowed. It's a weird divergence of left and right, with so much of right side of the political spectrum right now latched onto and driven by conspiracy theories. The extremes of both sides share and extreme distrust of current government and corporations. But how did something like Q-Anon penetrate so far into the right side of the spectrum? Or even the big election lie?

I totally get what you mean by sensing that something about the hiker was off. I can't explain it either, other than to acknowledge that lots of our assessment of people occurs "under the hood" by process we're not consciously aware of. I can't say that my "something is off" spider sense is 100% accurate. But when I feel it I do pay better attention to whatever set it off.
