OK. So you were complaining that folks were blaming the Afghan Military on ‘the debacle’, but you have absolutely no idea (1) who those folks are, or (2) what you are referring to as ‘the debacle’
Got it. : D
So when asked why he chose to pull out of Afghanistan, Biden says he wouldn't keep American forces there to fight when the Afghans would not be willing to fight after after America left and withdrew it's support? No, it sounded to me like Biden was saying that American soldiers were expected to fight the Taliban while the Afghans watched from the sidelines.Regardless, Afghan Security Forces weren’t willing to fight any longer past US involvement.
Some neo-Nazis and white nationalists are celebrating the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan on social-media channels, according to a research group tracking online comments.
The commenters are “idolizing the organization's violently anti-Semitic, antigovernmental, homophobic, and sexist beliefs and pushing for continued attacks against U.S. military and government assets,” SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks extremist threats online, said in a recent report, citing far-right message boards and neo-Nazi encrypted online platforms.
Nick Fuentes, a far-right personality and white nationalist, also has celebrated the takeover.
Remind me again, how many people were evacuated when Trump was President?Since the Defense Department began supporting the State Department with movement of people out of Afghanistan at the end of July, approximately 12,000 people have been moved out of country, Gen. Hank Taylor, deputy director of the Joint Staff for Regional Operations said Thursday.
That 12,000 number includes “American citizens, US Embassy personnel, individuals designated by the State Department as SIV applicants and other evacuees in coordination with the State Department,” Taylor said.
Included in that 12,000 number are 7,000 people that have been moved out of Afghanistan just since Aug. 14, Taylor said.
The Defense Department is “ready to increase throughput and have scheduled aircraft departures accordingly,” Taylor said.
“We intend to maximize each plane’s capacity. We are prioritizing people above all else, and we are focused on doing this as safely as possible with absolute urgency,” he added.
If you’re referencing this speech, you’ll need to locate that passage.ajax18 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 10:49 amSo when asked why he chose to pull out of Afghanistan, Biden says he wouldn't keep American forces there to fight when the Afghans would not be willing to fight after after America left and withdrew it's support? Your point being, presumably, that any comparison of the relative efficiency of the Trump and Biden administrations in organising mass evacuations under emergency conditions can be no more than hypothetical, because it was never attempted under Trump?
The miscalculation may come from the military and intelligence services. Good planning is hope for the best while planning for the worst. They don't appear to have prepared for the worst case. I would want to know if the Military wanted to implement a plan for the worst and if the white house rejected it since they may have felt it was unlikely. That would be poor planning. Now given the incompetence of the Trump administration, I see no reason to think they would have done better then the Biden administration.Chap wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 2:12 pmYour point being, presumably, that any comparison of the relative efficiency of the Trump and Biden administrations in organising mass evacuations under emergency conditions can be no more than hypothetical, because it was never attempted under Trump?
That point is not without value, but of course a Trump evacuation might (just might) have been hugely better than what we are seeing now, because ... well, one never knows I suppose.
