The snake oil industry, promoted by fraudsters like Mercola, makes bank of the anti-science left and right. Most of the time, damage is only to the pocketbooks of the gullible, with infrequent, tragic results. But, this pool of anti-science folks also gives rise to widespread harm like the current anti-mask and anti-vaccine movements. It all stems from the idea that Uncle Ira, who runs a stable, knows more about medicine than doctors, chemists, biologists, the product manufacture, and the government agency charged with approving drugs, combined with a paranoid belief that a cheap, easy solution exists for everyone problem but “they” are hiding it from us.

How deluded does a person have to be to ignore the company that makes horse dewormer when it tells people not to ingest its product?
There's all kinds of cheap easy solutions for good health. Here, I'll give you a couple. People need to lose weight, that's number 1. We are a extremely fat nation and we're getting fatter by the year. 2. Fat or skinny, just a small amount of moderate exercise does wonders for us physically and emotionally. 3. Diet! So many people have no idea how to eat healthy. One of the most addictive drugs on the planet is on isle number 2, SUGAR! If we could get those three under control 80% of our health problems would probably disappear in this nation.

I hate to tell ya, but there are a lot of people out there that aren't as fortunate as you and I. They rely on home remedies and old school techniques that have been around for a long time. It's all they have. You sound like some uppity white dude that never leaves his well to do neighborhood.

She combines three together, can't remember what the third is. Uses it on animals also.
If she's old school, I'm guessing that it's Bag Balm.
Not really that big of a deal, cheap way to try to cure before calling a vet for animals.
Not really that big of a deal, other than unnecessarily risking toxicosis and contributing to the potential of antiparasitic resistance from overuse.

here is an article in Nature about it.

My right-wing friend -- the most hopeless of my right-wing acquaintances -- is chock full of home remedy cures. I can't count the number of times he's plugged Vix, Campho Phenique, and Neosporin as miracles. I suppose if he'd grown up among right-wing ranchers he'd be taking horse pills also.

It looks like there were was some legitimate research out there investigating the effects Of Ivermectin on COVID-19. Nothing promising, save for a single rogue paper, which ended up getting pulled.

Seems like a perfect setup for a bad interaction. A bunch of hillbillies already taking the stuff for no good reasons, and then this rogue study gets some media attention and "Yeee---haaaawww!" Break out the banjos and stomp them bare feet on the porch. Hot diggity'; we got ourselves a miracle cure!

The article says it's popular in third world countries where the vaccine isn't available, and used as a stop-gap. I can understand that. If there's a chance and nothing else available, then what have you got to lose? I'm not saying it's right, but I understand it.

It's entirely different that in the United States, where we do have the vaccine, that a train-wreck of Trump fans are rejecting the vaccine and all-in on a home remedy. And it's one of the dumbest home remedies I've ever heard of as it is.
We can't take farmers and take all their people and send them back because they don't have maybe what they're supposed to have. They get rid of some of the people who have been there for 25 years and they work great and then you throw them out and they're replaced by criminals.

Atlanticmike, please tell us about some of the remedies that are used by non-uppity, non-white folks, here in America. We would all love to share in your cultural sensitivity.

Good article. Here's a recent Cochrane Review. https://www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/do ... .pub2/full

The study that was pulled was published only on a preprint server, meaning it was never peer reviewed. Problems that peer review would have hopefully caught:
Nature Article wrote:The paper’s irregularities came to light when Jack Lawrence, a master’s student at the University of London, was reading it for a class assignment and noticed that some phrases were identical to those in other published work. When he contacted researchers who specialize in detecting fraud in scientific publications, the group found other causes for concern, including dozens of patient records that seemed to be duplicates, inconsistencies between the raw data and the information in the paper, patients whose records indicate they died before the study’s start date, and numbers that seemed to be too consistent to have occurred by chance.
And, of course, the expected conspiracy theories:
Nature Article wrote:Adding to the difficulty are conspiracy theories holding that ivermectin has been proven to work and that drug companies are depriving the public of a cheap cure. Chaccour says he has been called ‘genocidal’ for doing research on the drug rather than just endorsing it.
he/him
we all just have to live through it,
holding each other’s hands.

I’d suspect that we’re all very lucky that COVID isn’t more deadly, or the difference in survivability with the current viral form versus a deadlier mutation would tragically reveal the actual ineffectiveness of these miracle cures.

At this moment, it’s easy to claim that taking Ivermectin is what saved the person who ingested it, given that the low mortality rate from infection likely won’t kill them anyway. We can more safely gamble with our ignorance. Next time, things might be different.

This is similar to the phenomenon of the proliferation so called "snake bite cures" in folk medicine due to the fact snakes do not always inject venom when they bite. Some experts say that in the case of rattlesnakes, for example, as much as half the time, rattlesnakes don't inject venom when biting merely as a fear or threat response toward any scary creature too big to be suitable as rattlesnake prey. Why waste precious venom on something it knows it can't eat, if it can avoid it? Anyone "miraculously" surviving one of these harmless, dry bites might easily jump to the conclusion that whatever they did, ate or drank immediately afterwards must be a snake bite cure, whether it is or not.
No precept or claim is more suspect or more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.

You really are a bigot! For Christ sake, get out and live a little. On another thread just a couple a minutes ago I talked about this old black guy I know along with his family. I've none them since I was young. The older members are into a lot of herbal remedies and techniques that have been past done through generations. They still harvest dandelion greens and dandelion root. The use it for s lot ailments and also make a nasty ass crap coffee out of it. That's one example of many.

The reason I used this family as an example is because I've none them forever. My kids go to school with some of the members of their family. The older people in this family, ( whole family of like 30 or 40 people) are all skinny, they're blessed with relatively good health. Are always outside working or cleaning something. They hardly take any kind a prescribed medication. Then when you get to the kids who are now around the age of 40 to 50 and grand kids in 20s and 30s, health problems start to show up. The younger generations tend to be overweight, deal with diabetes, and according to the patriarch of the family are as lazy as crap😂😂.

For so many people, modern medicine has helped them become comfortable and given them an excuse to be overweight, lazy and just not care about their overall health. Why?? Because there's a pill to "fix" just about every ailment out there today. I have a really small handyman business that takes me into a lot of houses. And it's more common than not to see 4 to 10 prescription bottles lined up on the bathroom counter when working in people's houses. We are replacing common sense eating habits along with moderate exercise with eat whatever the hell you want and take a pill to cure the side effects of unhealthy eating. It cracks me up how people like you who think they're so smart are so ignorant and scared of someone who might live a lifestyle that contradicts what you deem an acceptable lifestyle. Ultimately, if you boiled down your bigoted View of how others live, fear would be the number one reason you view people who don't live like you in a negative way.

I think doctors/scientists need to continually search for cures for this. Repurposed drugs are a good place to start. This Israeli doctor believes in ivermectin:

Other doctors have found success using corticosteroids:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34011029/

Here is what the NIH says about various treatments and ongoing trials:

Myth is misused by the powerful to subjugate the masses all too often.

I don’t see anyone arguing against searching for ‘cures’. But some folks probably shouldn’t eschew protection while awaiting a cure, or at least be more sure of why they’re willing to trust one option over the other.
