Umbrella.
I’m pretty sure that umbrellas are as effective against lightning as they are against gunfire.

AtlanticMike,

What will you do to protect your 120 pound wife from a 1.21 gigawatt bolt of lightning?
We wear two pair of garments when going outside, do you think that will help? Gee whiz dude!!

What about this video? An elderly woman in a poor neighborhood protecting herself with a pistol. In "your world" she wouldn't have the ability to protect herself with a highly effective weapon. You do realize if we ban guns, criminals don't all of sudden start working 9 to 5 and give up their criminal behavior? Again, what about this grandma, what would you have her do in this situation?

Sledge! I don't know where you live but maybe you should think about doing a ride along with a police department that patrols a high crime neighborhood. For example, there's a high crime neighborhood 10 minutes down the street from me that has a lot of elderly people living by themselves. They are constantly worried about a burglar breaking in. A gun gives them the ability to protect themselves without even getting off the couch. Not everyone is rich and white like you and I.

Just to remind us: laws about gun availability are not decided on the basis of what benefit having a handgun ready to use might or might not have been to some individual person in a given situation set out in somebody's favourite video clip.

Such laws are (or should be) decided on the basis of whether it is, on the whole, overall better or worse in terms of risk of death or serious injury of citizens for guns to be as easily available as they are in the US, or to make laws according to the practice in other countries where people like me or my (by no means rich) elderly parents, or indeed any other vulnerable person known to me never expressed anxiety to the effect that "I would feel much safer if everybody (NOT JUST ME) could easily buy a gun".

The capitalised, bolded, and underlined words are important. In order for Atlantimike's 'this old lady' or 'this 110 lb woman' to have easy possession of a gun, she would have to accept that guns would be much, much more common in the environment she lives in. And some of those guns would be possessed by people not entirely nice. Those of us who live in in low-gun environments on the whole prefer to keep it that way.

What about when an alien spaceship lands and all that is standing between the freedom of mankind and enslavement is a man armed with a shotgun, 20 handguns, 15 rifles, 5 grenades, and a wrist rocket?

You think my lightning scenario is absurd, and that people don't generally need to worry about being struck by lightning as long as they aren't standing on mountain tops in major electrical storms.

But the probability of someone getting struck by lightning and someone having to use a gun is about the same.

Has your wife ever killed a home invader? Has anyone you personally know had to kill a home invader?
