Re: The Texas abortion law
You're conflating gender identity with sexual biology, bro. Without the necessary biological plumbing you ain't having a baby, therefore reproductive rights aren't an issue.Atlanticmike wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 10:11 amYou don't need a vagina to be a woman. If a Giant's pronouns are "fee, fi, fi, and fum", does that mean short people's pronouns are "oompa, loompa, and doopity-doo"?

Re: The Texas abortion law
Just in the hope that this may unconfuse the discussion, we could choose to adopt the distinction (I'm not saying we have to):
SEX OF A PERSON:
In the great majority of cases (and for the moment let's stick to those), we may easily decide at birth, just by looking, whether a person has a male body or a female body. The first sort of body will be found to have cells with one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. The second sort of body has cells with two X chromosomes.
GENDER OF A PERSON:
Unlike sex, a person's gender involves social relations and social institutions. This distinction is often obscured by the fact that in many societies the masculine gender (man) is automatically assigned to people with male bodies, and the feminine gender (woman) is automatically assigned to people with female bodies. But in some societies things have been more complex. For me, what matters is that there have always been some people who have chosen to adopt genders that do not correspond to their birth sex (assuming that sex to have been, as it is in the great majority of cases, unambiguous). In some societies this has been seen as unproblematic, in others not.
I would like to make it plain, speaking purely for myself, that if somebody informs me that they wish to be considered as having a given gender, or no gender at all, or some kind of inter-gender status, I am happy to do anything I can to respect their wishes, regardless of their birth sex.
I do not, however, dismiss as perverse or hate-motivated any concerns that other people may have about (for instance) finding a person who has the physical advantages conferred by having undergone a male adolescence wishing to compete in an athletic contest with people who were born with two X chromosomes and underwent female adolescences. I have no views on how such problems could be solved. Fortunately, they are rare, and ought not to interfere with the right to respect and privacy of the great majority of people who wish to live in a gender that does not correspond to their sex at birth.

In 30 to 40 years babies will be grown to term in artificial wombs. There's a good chance you'll be able to go to a birth center and watch your child grow while it developes in a clear bag. Biological plumbing won't matter in the future when it comes to human birth.DaveIsHere wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 5:25 pmYou're conflating gender identity with sexual biology, bro. I was a bit puzzled when I saw your quote, because I did not write the words "Stuff I agree with, mostly". But then I realised that that is a statement by you about what I wrote, not an actual quote.
In such a case, some people, me included, handle it like this:
The < > signs show that the words enclosed are a summary description of what the referenced poster wrote, not an actual quote. Other potential examples might be <antivaxxer stuff>, or <rant about Fauci>, and so on.

O... K ... Let me try it this way.DaveIsHere wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 8:59 pmbro, you're asking guy that frames houses to code. Y'all knew what I meant.
If you quote me, quote me. Don't change what I write.
If you want to comment on what I wrote, just say what you want to say and have done.
And please don't act like people who work in construction are dumb. They aren't, and you aren't either. So don't act like you are.
