A slight correction (or perhaps an addition) if I may: It's more than the "dying Christ" - Much more actually. It's the resurrection - the Resurrected Christ that most Christians preach and find extremely significant. In other words, it's not just the death on the cross, it's the defeating of death that was accomplished on the cross by Christ. And the scriptural "wages of sin is death" leaves all of us in that boat - Unless we attach ourselves to Jesus and what Jesus did, then we can avoid this wage - not by what we can do or by what we did - but by what Jesus has already done.Atlanticmike wrote: ↑Thu Sep 16, 2021 11:43 amOne other thing. Do you understand why a large percentage of Christians have a hard time with our religion? It's not just Joseph, prophets, polygamy and so on. You see, most Christians preach of the dying Christ! That's why the cross is so important to modern day Christians.
Having said that, in my opinion, if there was/is no resurrected Jesus, Christianity is pointless at best, and at worst, is completely foolish and should be paid exactly no attention.
Just my take anyway.

Re: Kwaku on the Offensive Against Radio Free Mormon!
Hi ceeboo. My experiences with Christians in my family and friends is of course the Resurrection is very important. But the actual death of Christ on the Cross, emphasis being on the cross, im talking about the cross, in my opinion differs greatly when compared between Christians and Mormons. As a young Mormon boy I couldn't bring a cross into my house. As a young Mormon boy, if one of my cousins came over to play and was wearing a cross, all I could think about was the cross hanging around his/her neck, I wanted it out of my house quickly as possible. I was taught to never wear a Cross. That it was disrespectful to Jesus and Heavenly Father. When I was young and read the Bible and came across verses like ""I will never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ"" (Gal. 6:14) I would dismiss verses like that using the eight article of faith that says ""we believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly." Ceeboo, as a youngster, I can remember riding in the car and passing Christian churches and thinking, "" why would those people put a cross on top of their church, it must be the devil."" Ceeboo, I'm in my mid 40s now and there is still a small part of me that despises the cross when I drive past a Christian Church. For some reason i can't get that feeling to go completely away.ceeboo wrote: ↑Thu Sep 16, 2021 12:06 pmGood morning, Mike

Ceeboo, if you've ever wondered why Mormons don't wear or use the cross, hears a quote by Gordon B Hinckley. ""I do not wish to give offense to any of my Christian brother in who use the cross on the Steeples of their Cathedrals and at the altars of their chapels, who wear it on their vestments, and imprint it on their books and other literature. But for us, the cross is the symbol of the dying Christ, while our message is a declaration of the living Christ."'
Maybe my upbringing was different than most Mormons, who knows. But I definitely viewed the cross as a torture device while most of my Christian family viewed it as device used to free us from the slavery of sin.

Interesting - And the Hinckley quote was very interesting as well!Atlanticmike wrote: ↑Thu Sep 16, 2021 1:00 pmHi ceeboo. Re: Kwaku on the Offensive Against Radio Free Mormon!
That was pretty much my upbringing in the Church with regards to the cross that was looked upon as a symbol of apostate Christianity. Crosses on Christian churches were no better than poker cards in a gambling casino which establishments represented Babylon the Great and the Church of the Devil. There are two churches only: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and all OTHER churches which are The Church of the Devil except there be a few humble followers of Christ within them who will yet embrace the gospel.
David O McKay was my childhood prophet and then Joseph Fielding Smith was my gold standard as a youth and along with Kimball. I never cared for McConkie too much because he was an obvious prick and seemed mean spirited but Joseph Fielding Smith was the standard by which I grew up with. I know the doctrine and the spirit of which modern Israel separated themselves from society as a chosen and peculiar people.
Just saying.

You don’t seem to understand the majesty, breadth, and depth of God’s plan to bring all souls…who choose to…back to Him. Vicarious ordinances performed in the sacred walls of the temple provide the pathway for any and all of God’s children to return to His presence and become part of His eternal family structure.Atlanticmike wrote: ↑Thu Sep 16, 2021 11:43 amAn eternal family (celestial family), looks like a gathering of just a fraction of 1% of God's spirit children who won the war in heaven and decided to be tested here on Earth.MG 2.0 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 15, 2021 10:26 pm
What does an eternal family consist of? How would an eternal family differ from say, your Uncle Ted and Aunt Martha who celebrated their 50th Anniversary, more in love than the day they were married…but they were Jewish…and they died without the gospel. They go to the Spirit World and aren’t too keen on being joint heirs with Christ. So, what becomes of their relationship? What do you think? How will it be different for them compared to a righteous LDS couple, married in the temple, with their marriage ratified by the Holy Spirit of Promise?
Interested in your thoughts.

Let me ask you this. Are you keeping your covenants and wearing the sacred garment, or is this comment meant to ridicule the garment?
Let me ask you this. Are you obeying the word of wisdom by not drinking coffee and adhering to the other elements of the WofW?
Do you drink alcohol?
Now you’re getting into something that is considered to be sacrosanct.
Are you opposed then to guidelines of sexual purity of any sort?
Are you serious?Atlanticmike wrote: ↑Thu Sep 16, 2021 11:43 am…view everyone we meet as a potential Mormon and so on and so on.
That may or may not be true.Atlanticmike wrote: ↑Thu Sep 16, 2021 11:43 amCome on mg2.0! Everyone here who grew up in the church knows what it "requires" to reach the celestial kingdom.
We are a work and FAITH based religion. We do what we do because we love the Lord and want to obey our Father in Heaven. Do you agree?Atlanticmike wrote: ↑Thu Sep 16, 2021 11:43 amWe are a work based religion. We never stop working, never ever!
Families that are in complete alignment with God and His ways.Atlanticmike wrote: ↑Thu Sep 16, 2021 11:43 am…tell me what you think a celestial family looks like?
The cross and the resurrection are intertwined. The LDS church focuses more on Christ’s resurrection and the hope that we have in receiving that gift.Atlanticmike wrote: ↑Thu Sep 16, 2021 11:43 amOne other thing. That's why the cross is so important to modern day Christians. We on the other hand, preach and teach the living Christ. That's why we don't wear or present the cross in any way. Christianity will never accept us while we view the cross as a torture device. The cross and the sacrifice Christ made for us is everything to a Christian. For us, it's just a piece of the puzzle. Correct?

Mormons are getting very close to abandoning the idea that they are the one true church, and retreating into the irrelevance of "We're just another way to be christian"

I don’t think so. There is a bit of nuance that comes into play nowadays, however. That I can see and am in agreement with.

All I know is that it's wrong to criticize RFM, even if the criticism is true. (which it isn't)
Kwaku and friends should be utterly ashamed of themselves and should all go outside and have a word with themselves.

I attend weekly, but of late I'm having a hard time figuring out where things are going. And for sure, I've never seen things so divided. It's fascinating to watch and see what happens next.

Mormonism can be another way to be Christian—the word isn't trademarked—but I don't know about "just".
You might be able to argue that the Mormon difference is comparable to the difference between Roman Catholics and Protestants. The Mormon difference is definitely not smaller than that. And the Catholic-Protestant divide has obviously been historically enormous in the Christian world.
Within a larger context the difference might not seem so big. You could maybe say things like "Catholicism and Protestantism are just different ways of being religious." Once you're within the frame of being Christian, though, the Catholic-Protestant split is a huge one. Even if you feel that they are two kinds of Christianity, you wouldn't say that they are "just" that. So it seems weird to say that Mormonism is "just" another form of Christianity.
