This kind of sentiment is also sometimes expressed by telling people 'If you don't like it here, you can leave'.

The thinking (if we may call it that) behind such statements is bizarre. A patriotic citizen of any country is often keenly aware of the things about their country that need to be changed - like women needing to get the vote, ending slavery, giving city dwellers pure water to drink, and ending child factory labour. The fact that the US has had so many active reforming patriots who have worked for such changes in the past is precisely why it is a great country today. And people who see racism as a terrible blemish on the country they love feel impelled, in their turn, to do something to make things better in future.

How can a true patriot not wish to make their country a better place for all its citizens? And how can any patriot want to pretend that everything is already so perfect that there is no more that needs to be done?
