About twenty of us had to suffer much abuse from a native speaking French professor at Brown by translating portions of this book. She was nasty, mean and sarcastic--she shouted and laughed at those of us who took that class. But I passed that class and hence passed the French requirement. That very demanding and cranky woman helped me in many ways for what became part of what I taught at BYU.

I believe Dr. Midgley is referring to an old student of his, Gary Novak, who formulated what he called “Novak’s Rule 1 of Anti-Mormonism”: “when becoming an anti-Mormon, expect your IQ to drop at least 85 points. Or, to put it a little more succinctly: God strikes you stupid.”

Is this related to Dr. Midgley's own frail condition, or has he been this irascible for some time?

I’m afraid I can’t speak to that question. Perhaps, though, we will find some satisfying answers in Dr. Midgley’s forthcoming The Confessions of Saint Louis, which will chronicle his aggressive and combative youth (beating up a junior high classmate, starring as a member of the East High debate team, etc.); his 1950-1952 mission to convert the Māori; his legendary years at Brown University; his 1980 decision to sacrifice his career as a political scientist to become a Mopologist; his various confrontations with Stephen Crary, Ernest Wilkinson, Cleon Skousen, D. Michael Quinn and New Mormon historians, cultural Mormons, Signature Books, Marvin Hill, Sandra Tanner, James White, various antimormonoids, Grant Palmer, Rodney Meldrum, Hartman Rector, and John Dehlin; his time with FARMS and the Maxwell Institute; his 2012 booting from the Maxwell Institute by the evil Dr. Bradford; his 2017 sanctification by the Holy Spirit; and his recent posting-up-a-storm at Sic et Non.

I am also expecting a few insights in the pages of the forthcoming festschrift in honor of Dr. Midgley, especially an autobiographical piece titled “A Giving of Accounts” and a piece titled “The Ballad of Lou the Mean” by Bill Hamblin.

I kid you not. There is a chapter entitled, The Ballad of Lou the Mean, by William Hamblin.

This chapter alone, makes the $30 price tag worth it.
