Me too! It is such credo that has debilitated more than habilitated those who have fallen victim to Mormon-maddness. So contrary to the Jesus example, "...he without sin cast the first stone..."

I'm in sympathy with Marie. She, or anyone in her position, needs all the support she/they can get. As with so many of us our decisions in parental matters, they are not always the best. But as someone said, "...doing the best with what you have..." Hopefully we too learn from our mistakes, as do the children, who hopefuuly have not been hurt beyond forgiving... Warm regards, Roger

Thanks Merc, for posting the Marie story. I just watched it. Should have first, before posting. I think she is courageous to publicly discuss a very personal matter, that cannot be without heart-breaking pain. AND, as a Public-Mormon, who has been LDS exploited--in my opinion-- to put forth on family difficulties that are "...not supposed to exist in good LDS families..." is almost heroic.

It is a wake-up-call to LDS parents especially--and others of course--that FAMILY COMES FIRST!!! For too long the homily, " the family that prays together stays together" has not been as effective as hoped. Otherwise... I am talking real family, here, now, moment-by-moment! Not some corporate, structured, family-one-nighter scheduled one-out-of-seven, with hymns and prayer. Or the next-world with folks you don't even know...

OTOH, "... the family that plays together..." tends to a more joyous, rewarding relationship that is not expressed in bitterness that is often found here. Generally speaking, of course.

And, I ask, why such bitterness directed at the messenger here?? Folks, it's the message!!! Mormonism doesn't work as its Principlals pretend cuz it's not following practical Principles. Get off'a Merc's back, YEESHH! Warm regards, Roger

You believe it's somehow OK to put down other people based on their struggles in life, and even enjoy it. Being called an "extreme wacko" by someone like you reads like a compliment.

As she prostrates herself on the Lizards altar you could see a look of shame and not the face of a mother who has a real plan to fix her son.

What led you to believe that she didn't have a plan in place? I didn't sense that at all. Her son is in rehab. It sounds like she's doing the best she can with the situation.

As a parent of teen-agers, myself, I can't imagine the heartache she must be going through. And to be publicly called out on it unexpectedly must have been devastating for her.

I think she was caught off guard and didn't really know what to say.

I don't think that her public shame overshadowed the sincere pain she feels regarding the situation with her son. I assessed it as more of a case of her simply not being prepared to deal with this situation in a public setting.

I don't know that I could have handled it any better.

I hope her son gets the help he needs.

I found it. When we were looking for treatment options for our daughter we spoke to an adolescent substance abuse therapist for referrals. She gave me this list of possible options for us here in Utah. They are a mix of Day Treatment, Residential Treatment, Residential Treatment with Academics, Residential Treatment Boarding Schools and Wilderness Therapy.

My daughter's center housed 60 patients and was nearly always filled to capacity. It had anywhere between 100-150 outpatient service patients. According to my daughter's counselor approximately 80% of the teens had listed LDS as their religious affiliation.
