KSL was the one that pointed out the connection. Do you consider KSL to have been "speculating...just to cast aspersions"?

Apparently it was interesting enough for KSL to put it on the air.

An excellent point. KSL evidently thought that this man's LDS connection was worth mentioning.

And every other news outlet thought that this man's participation on a message board was worth mentioning.

*cue sinister organ music*

Well, Steuss, what do you think? Do you think that this man's involvement with the LDS Church had any bearing whatsoever on his mental state?

I suspect he had KFC that day.

Obviously they need to add a question before baptism. In addition to asking if you are a homosexual and/or have had a sex reassignment they need to ask if you plan to go on a murderous rampage at any time in the future.
Insert ironic quote from fellow board member here.

The Colonel DOES have wee bitty eyes. I'd never given that much thought before. Creeepy.

Go ahead and make light of this tragic situation, Nehor. I'm sure your new girlfriend would love to know how sensitive you are.

Besides, neither I---nor anyone else on this thread---is saying definitively that, "The Church led him to commit murder." I'm merely saying that there is nothing wrong with examining some of the LDS-related things which may or may not have contributed to his mental state. We have no problem doing this in the case of Islamic terrorists, now do we? Further, it just seems very striking that, in only a year's time, this young man would go from "welcoming religion into his life"---i.e., the LDS Church---to going on a murderous rampage.

I would be curious to learn, either from his family members or his ward members, why he decided to go inactive.

by the way: the quote is "wee, beady eyes." Mr. Mike Myers also tells us that the Colonel has a "smug look on his face."

I think it’s possible. Maybe not probable, but it certainly is possible. I think it depends on his previous experiences with various religions and how he viewed his overall experience with the LDS Church. Maybe someone didn’t call on him to give a talk after he was baptized. Maybe the girls in the single’s ward didn’t think he was the bees knees. Perhaps his brief involvement with the LDS Church prior to inactivity was a form of “last attempt” to fill a void and/or seek help. Maybe we as members failed him.

I don’t know.

http://blog.mrm.org/2006/12/bound-for-glory/

The inhabitants of the Telestial kingdom will delight in an existence of far greater comfort and enjoyment than anything available on earth; a glory beyond mortal understanding. There will be no death, disease, infirmity, taxes, wars, bills or menial labor. The people will be free to socialize, travel and learn (Victor Ludlow, Principles and Practices of the Restored Gospel,240-241). In fact, Joseph Smith reportedly said,

The telestial kingdom is so great, if we knew what it was like we would kill ourselves to get there. (see Richard Neitzel Holzapfel,The Heavens Are Open, The 1992 Sperry Symposium of the Doctrine and Covenant and Church History, 155)

If you just can't believe in yourself, if you think you've failed over and over, if you think you'll never amount to anything, there's one way, if you believe it, that you can make everything instantly better, thousands of times better. Not to mention you're making the lives of anyone you take with you better to.

LM 11/23/2018: one can explain away the soul of human beings...as...a Meat Unit, to use Professor Peterson's clever derogatory description of gemli's ideology.

The LDS connection was not reported in the general area in which these two incidents took place.

I make light of all tragic situations. It's a common theme around here. Many do it. And yes, I'm sure she would be shocked and horrified by what I said though she didn't say much about the other comments similar to it that I throw out. It's called dark humor. Choose to be offended if you must.

I also stand corrected....I need to get that movie and watch it again.

As for examining his life, I think that's a fruitless endeavor. I don't think any of us are qualified to diagnose him (though I could be wrong) and I seriously doubt any of us will have access to him. To quote a great psychiatrist, "I can't diagnose thin air." So this would all just be guessing.
