I don't ever remember passing any objects.
There's no passing around an object. The group circles the representative giving the prayer, and he holds (places his hands on) the names of the "sick and afflicted" being prayed for.
I was always taught repetitious, memorized prayers, (like what the Catholics do) are wrong.
"We of this Church do not rely on any man-made statement concerning the nature of Deity. Our knowledge comes directly from the personal experience of Joseph Smith." - Gordon B. Hinckley
"It's wrong to criticize leaders of the Mormon Church even if the criticism is true." - Dallin H. Oaks

The prayer circle isn't memorized.
The chant at the beginning is, but the actual prayer isn't.
It's not rote, but it is repetitious. I have been in the prayer circle many times, and they're usually very similar. It's sort of like the blessing on the food that so many Mormons give. It's not rote, but it may as well be.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen
Why is the true order of prayer only practiced in the temple???
Why don't LDS use the TOoP in their everyday lives? Wouldn't it seem that God would prefer those prayers rather than the standard prayers?
Also, does God listen to those prayers more intently than a regular prayer?
The Temple is like the Superman's Fortress of Solitude. While Superman could have direct communication with his father in special circumstances outside the FoS (i.e. when turning back time), the FoS was a special place set aside with supernatural powers that would allow him to have special communication. And the very act of going to the North Pole prepared him for that communication in a way that wouldn't have been possible had he had a green crystal sitting in his apartment in Metropolis.
Likewise, the act of going to the Temple and being apart from the world prepares us for the clothing and experiences there. If we were to dress or act that way in the "outside" world, our minds would probably be preoccupied with other thoughts (and if non-Temple goers were around, crippling embarrassment) and we wouldn't be able to get the revelation we need.

I never passed anything around, but we did have a little bag of names over which we prayed. The names were submitted by members. I know my name was turned in for prayer after I lost my testimony. The prayers didn't do me much good... KA
I stand to be corrected, there was probably an envelope as for
prayers didn't do me much good
...,
they should try putting Virgin Mary Statue in the middle of table.
