Midgley: The Bravest Man Alive?

I ran into the most bizarre comment made by one of our members here on MDB that also posts at FAIR/MAD, Scott Loyd. On yet another smear thread where the apologists are looking for any way they can to discredit Rod Meldrum and make fun of him, Scott triumphantly brings up the infamous "browbeating" of Sandra Tanner a number of years ago.

The discussion underway was apparently about an in-person conversation between Meldrum and Midgley.

In size Meldrum (he's dang tall) and when I saw him speak to people he seems to lean over them, but Midgley never let a little thing like that intimidate him, lol.

The old "David and Goliath" slur with Meldrum as the big, dumb, and rude philistine. Scott replied to this, saying,

If he has enough fortitude to walk into the Tanners' bookstore and take on Sandra on her home turf, I'm guessing he'll face most any earthly entitity.

I could hardly believe what I was reading. Imagine the "balls" Midgley must posess for him to go down to the Tanner's business and corner a lone, older woman while accompanied by his hired muscle, Novak and Roper. Roper at least, is not a little guy.

Three grown men against one elderly woman, two there as "witnesses" and the third harrassingly "taking notes", getting every little slip down that can be used later, as if the words of someone unexpectedly cornered, intimidated, and browbeaten could ever fairly represent her position.

Yes Scott, the bravery of these apologists is unheard of.

Well, facing down Sandra Tanner is like unto facing down Satan himself. Yes, that requires a great deal of bravery. You must remember how scary Satan was in the temple film.....particularly that close up shot.

lol! Sandra is not an especially intimidating woman, either. She's short, getting on in years, round-faced, and downright good-natured.

I'm the bravest man in the world. I daily go head to head with children skateboarding and passing footballs through the store and I absolutely pwn those little bastards. I rule those heelie wearing craps. Although Midgley could probably do it better in true curmudgeon fashion.

While attending the 2002 Sunstone Conference, I walked over to the UTLM bookstore. Two guys who were attending the FAIR meeting came in and started hassling Sandra Tanner. I'm not sure why some LDS apologists feel that being jerks is productive.

I don't think physical size has anything to do with this. While Jerald was the researcher, and a shy man, Sandra was the spokesperson for their ministry. She is articulate and very well spoken. I think that's what Midgley was up against, and what Scott pointed out.

Did Scott note whether Sandra's first words to this trio was, "Did Father send you"?
