Re: Why did Master BateMan hate individual mens sports?
I was at BYU during the Bateman years, and I heard a great deal about Title IX and its impact on the smaller men's sports program -- at BYU and elsewhere -- especially given the fact that I really don't care much about intercollegiate athletics.
What happened at BYU wasn't unusual during the period. In fact, it was quite typical. There's no need at all to invoke any supposed special antipathy on the part of Merrill Bateman toward smaller men's athletic programs in order to explain what happened.

Yes, it's been used 522 times out of around 180,000 posts. I've no calculator in front of me, but I guesstimate that's around, what, a third of a percent? I wonder how many of those 522 (now 523!) posts weren't actually calling for a reference, but were instead quoting portions of posts which had previously called for references? Perhaps like my quote of you, and your quote of me, and now this reply which, again, uses "CFR" but is in no way calling for a reference?
Here's what I said:

I was right about "CFR" not being used often on this board. I was right about there being no requirement to supply references.

You're finally catching on! (Hey, I took my cue from the Gospel Doctrine manual's treatment of the Wentworth letter.)

It's not clear to me that making sweeping allegations without any obligation to back them up is an unqualifiedly good thing.

It's not clear to me, either; however, new posters to the board should be aware that they are not required to provide references, even if requested.

Ah yes, my old roomie told me about the Peter-man. I see he was correct. Another damn Utah Mormon.

Maybe he was opposed to sweaty guys in tight shorts grabbing each other and rolling around on a mat while other guys watch. More likely, it was Title IX.

I was kinda leaning this way too, except that gymnasts don't grab each other (although they do have tight ... ummm... uniforms).
More likely, it was Title IX.
Those damn women. If they'd just stayed in the kitchen, the men would still be wrestling in Provo.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

I had thought that LDS faculty had spiritual requirements as a condition of their employment, such as payment of tithing. While this wouldn't make it a "church calling", it would definitely distinguish it from teaching positions at more secular colleges.

I'm not sure what you mean by "spiritual qualifications". Membership in the church is not a requirement for faculty or students, so long as the individual adheres to the standards (WOW, chastity, etc.).
