I don’t know if that is exactly true as I lived through it too..
Regardless, as a society it was much easier in 1968 to harbor racial opinions such as the Churches than it was in 1978. By 1988 or 1998 it would have been untenable and I think Church leaders saw tide was against them.
I also would not discount the Churches inability to discern the seed of Cain in its South American members as a reason.
