His stepfather had "faith in the priesthood instead of competent medical skill"?
Wow! I corresponded with the stepfather during that period, and spoke with the stepfather on the telephone during that period, and conversed with the stepfather face to face during that period, and I never noticed that!
The stepfather spent considerable time at the hospital -- he'd come from out of state to do so -- and he seemed to be thoroughly on board with modern medical procedures, very concerned that his daughter receive the best possible treatment.
However, I certainly trust ideologically-hostile total strangers' opinions on message boards a lot more than I trust what I've seen and heard with my own eyes, so I'm going to be fundamentally revising my views on this case.
Thanks!
