The context of the quote is important. Yuri Gagarin had orbited the earth a month before, and Alan Shepard had been the first American in space a mere nine days before President Smith's pronouncement. Ten days later John Kennedy announced that the US was going to send a man to the moon by the end of the decade.

In other words, the subject was being talked about by just about everyone at that time, and President Smith was pretty clear that it wouldn't happen.

I'd say this is a good example of the "speaking as a man" thing, but some people just can't allow that.

Here's the thing - everyone is always speaking as a man (or woman) at all times.

LOL I was about to put Jason's quote here but you beat me to it. I am just glad I was not drinking anything at the time or I would be cleaning my monitor.

Yeah, it was pretty hilarious. Mopologists will literally defend anything.

Well, Pres. Smith needs defending only if one believes man actually made it to the moon. Which, of course, he didn't.

See?

Zelder has no doubts about This, though.

I wonder if zelder is a Generation Y'er?.

He/she could be right, though, and here's the proof that it was all a Hollywood concoction.

And this guy is at complete ease criticizing Mormon beliefs. Unbelievable.

That is more true of LDS history than almost anything, especially since our side of the story is so sketchy due to not really writing a lot of stuff down. Much of it is second and third hand anecdotes. We are just now sifting through all the documents we do have and telling our side of the story.
