A parent is having one of those moments in life that you never look forward to. The day your baby is going to borrow the car and drive off ...

Watch this YouTube commercial. This is how Dads see their daughters...when they're 16...when they're 30...doesn't matter.

You are so right, Liz. I watch that commercial with fascination every time it comes on.

Okay, what is the problem -- she is 18 and a legal adult. She can join the military, go to exotic places around the world, meeting interesting people, and then kill them, so why should she not have the right to date and/or marry whoever she wishes?

As long as she is still in High School and under her parent's roof, her parents have a say in who she dates, where she goes, etc.

Which is until... next week.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Well, is she planning on getting her own apartment and completly supporting herself after next week?

That would be my criteria. Actually, it currently IS my criteria. My oldest daughter is attending college at UNCG, is working, and has her own apartment. She is an adult. She comes and goes as she pleases.

My younger daughter is 19, attending college, but lives at home. Because she still lives at home, and we are feeding and housing her, she still has to follow house rules. If she is going to be late, she calls. She has to ask permission to have a group of friends over in the evening because hubby and I work and my son is 7 and has school.

Are there differences in how you treat a young adult? Yes...but KA is right about respect for house rules while you are living in your parent's house...regardless of age.

For all we know, she's planning on moving in with the 33 year old guy.

Some Schmo wrote:Well, as the father of a preteen daughter, I can certainly understand the impulse to take a bat to this guy's kneecaps, but to be real, he's not the problem. The girl is, which is to say, she's the one that needs to be advised. I agree with KA that what needs to happen is a frank discussion between the parents and the daughter about the realities of this relationship. The parents really need to step up and be there for her. They can't legally prevent the relationship, but they can certainly get in her ear and influence what she thinks about it.

But in the end, they will do more harm to their relationship with her by trying to control the daughter's behavior than by letting her make her own mistakes and learn the hard way. That's why being a caring parent is the hardest job in the world.

Arent' you saying here that you would welcome and encourage this relationship? I mean, think of all the "knowledge" this 18 year old could get in such a short time. In fact, to remain true to your ideals, you should be advocating some kind of system where sexually experienced men can "tutor" these young girls into sexual mastery. After all, more knowledge is always better.

Doesn't the context of the relationship matter at all? If the guy is just out for sex then I would not see him as good company for the woman. However, if he wants a relationship (does he want to take her to the temple?) then what of it?

Better an older good man than a younger jerk.
