LDS Church issues new statement on immigration controversy

Today, the LDS Church issued a new statement (unsigned by the FP) concerning immigration issues, just days before an immigration resolution is to be voted upon by the Utah legislature. Here is the link to the statement:

Nothing changed. The conservative option remains viable under LDS doctrine and policy. In fact it is the ONLY viable option.

Today, the LDS Church issued a new statement (unsigned by the FP) concerning immigration issues, just days before an immigration resolution is to be voted upon by the Utah legislature.

I know, it's weird to be responding to my own OP, but some of the quotes by legislators in the Trib article confirmed to me the awesome power the LDS Church wields in UT politics:

1. A delegate who helped create the guest-worker bill (which the Church supported and the resolution now seeks to repeal) said, "[T]he statement was the clearest yet from the church and that there is no way for a delegate voting on the resolution to believe the First Presidency isn't backing it." (Emphasis added).

2. Another proponent of the guest-worker bill said "he plans to share the statement of the church as a part of his campaign leading up to the Utah Republican Party Convention." (Emphasis added).

3. An opponent of the guest-worker bill (and supporter of repeal) interpreted the statement as giving delegates "plenty of wiggle room when considering their vote on the resolution[,]" and that because the statement won't be read from the publit, "there isn't a way for Mormon delegates to think that by voting for the resolution they are going against the First Presidency." (Emphasis added).
