Wives of Joseph Smith Sealing Question

Post by _moksha »

When the wives of Joseph Smith remarried after his death, were the sealings to Joseph cancelled or were new sealings simply added to Brigham Young and others?

I believe the new sealings (to Brigham, Heber and others) were for time only so the sealings to Joseph, for time and all eternity, were not cancelled.
What has always confused me is why most of his plural wives were sealed to Joseph by proxy after his death?
Since the sealing power was given to Joseph in 1836 why the need for proxy sealings? Were they not properly sealed to him while he was alive?
It is my province to teach to the Church what the doctrine is. It is your province to echo what I say or to remain silent.

My ancestor was sealed to Joseph Smith (at the insistence of Brigham Young) shortly after his death. She was then immediately married (as a plural wife) to Fredrick Walter Cox for time only. There is debate as to whether or not she was married to Joseph during his life.

Perhaps either Emma kept an eagle eye on the comings and going of the sealing place or there was a change in the ceremony requiring it be done at an Altar.

It surprises me that Brigham Young settled for time without eternity.

Doesn't surprise me.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.
