I suggest that it is the proponents of Mormonism who depict or imagine all people as 'miserable until they find happiness in...Mormonism'

That Stone and Parker portray this in their musical is simply a reflection of real LDS culture.

Funny how you morph the mishmash I described into 'real LDS culture'. Why?

One of the major difficulties I'm having is distinguishing between you pretending to be stupid just to get people off their guard, pretending to be stupid because you can't be bothered to think and wanted someone else to do it for you, pretending to be outrageously stupid to hide the fact that you actually don't understand what is going on, and really being genuinely stupid.

Can you clarify?

Wow... I cannot remember anyone on this board responding to one of my posts with such unwarranted maliciousness. I have purposely waited after reading your diatribe before responding to help ensure that I do so calmly.

I will attempt to clarify: you claimed that the Book of Mormon musical portrayed 'Africans' (as if this label means anything of significance... Moroccans? Egyptians? Tanzanians? Angolans? Guineans? Zambians?) as a people who are miserable until they are provided with something which makes them happy. I pointed out that the LDS Church, in fact, teaches that people can gain happiness by joining their church and adhering to their teachings. How is this a slam on the Church? How is this stupid? How does my comment warrant the dismissive douchebaggery you've posted?

I'm reluctant to share my travel plans or trips with anyone here. As DCP has learned traveling is a form of boasting here.

But you DID see it, right?

Indeed. Or when someone leaves the church or a gay person comes out, the common reaction is "well he can't be happy." No one is truly happy outside the church. They just THINK they're happy.

Oh, boo-hoo.

I have purposely waited after reading your diatribe before responding to help ensure that I do so calmly.

How delightfully gentlemanly you are.

So you're okay with blackface then because the people being mocked are not specific as to their exact nation of origin? I encourage you to run with that and bring it back.

I pointed out that the LDS Church, in fact, teaches that people can gain happiness by joining their church and adhering to their teachings.

Yes.

How is this a slam on the Church?

It's not.

How is this stupid?

It's not.

How does my comment warrant the dismissive douchebaggery you've posted?

Because you've decided to misrepresent what you wrote. That is a douchebaggy thing to do.

Your argument above is the writers are able to make up any caricature they want because that is how you think LDS think of others even though they represented the LDS incorrectly on that score too.

If you think that is convoluted and idiotic you are right.

I think that what Nehor is saying is that if that was all Stone and Parker had done, that would be fine. The fact that they combine happiness with, not only Mormonism, but "geek culture" and acid trips is the part that is offensive.

I have not seen the musical, so I can't really comment. by the way, Nehor...I'm jealous you just went to NY and saw a broadway show. What gives? You leave your favorite Goddess behind? LOL

For the record, what, exactly, did you mean by "geek culture", Nehor? I'm not really sure what you mean by that. I'm a computer geek. Any similarity?

The acid trip idea seems really "off". I would consider that portrayal offensive as well, since it has absolutely NOTHING to do with any of our beliefs. That is something we are very much against.

At one point the relatively ignorant missionary decides to start teaching LDS doctrine but he doesn't know it so he combines bits of it with sci-fi nerd culture and random junk to fill in the dots. It portrays LDS missionaries and Africans as total idiots.

So where does the acid trip fit into all of this?

And...probably an off topic question..but did you see any other Broadway shows while you were there?
