I've published more about Mormon history than he had. (He had published precisely nothing.) I'm more involved with professional historians of Mormonism than he was.
Leonard Arrington, the founder of "the new Mormon history" and the founding president of the Mormon History Association and for ten years the official Church Historian, was a professor of economics. Davis Bitton (a former Assistant Church Historian) and Stan Kimball, two subsequent presidents of the MHA and themselves prolific historians of Mormonism, held appointments as professors of European history.
