When I mentioned it was a common story to zen Buddhism, he said something along the lines of it not being Christian and should we really be sharing it in class? I thanked him for the unsolicited object lesson and asked if anyone else had other examples of how having a pre-filled cup may inhibit our sharing?
I like this story very much and will try to remember it for future reference.
I think it was President McKay, a teacher by profession, who said the worst people to try to teach the gospel to are teachers because they think they already know it all.
When your EQ member voiced his objection to this story coming from a non-Christian tradition, I would have been tempted to observe that Brigham Young sent the elders out into the world with instructions to gather all knowledge they could from every religion and culture and bring it home to Zion.
As some wit once put it,

I thought myself the wiser to have viewed the evidence left of such a great demise. I followed every step. But the only thing I ever learned before the journey's end was there was nothing there to learn, only something to forget.
