Do you respect the beliefs of Muslim men who kill their wives or daughters as a result of the man's religious beliefs and the transgressions of the female?

If not, and you are drawing the line of respect at physical harm to other human beings, why not also include the emotional and societal harm that TBM families and communities inflict on those that choose to apostasize or to be less active, such as a 19-year old Mormon male that chooses not to go on a mission or a Mormon that marries a non-Mormon or two Mormons that marry outside the temple?

TBM beliefs, and actions TBMs take in response to them, cause harm. For example, consider zeezrom's experiences over the last two years.

And that was really the point I was trying to drive home.

Obviously, not all beliefs are equally harmful. If I point out the most egregious beliefs, and the theist comes back with, "well this other belief isn't that bad" we're left wondering, "so how much harm is acceptable?" If we say one belief must be respected despite its harm because it's "sacred" to the person holding it, doesn't it lay the ground work for more destructive beliefs not being held up to scrutiny?

Why, because you refuse to acknowledge the point with the examples used? Really? What is it about the idea "not all beliefs should be tolerated" that would be more understandable with more benign examples?

So now you're saying that the LDS faith should not be tolerated in society?

I don't think any faith should be tolerated if it causes harm.

I mean, that's a small part of why I'm here, liz. I point out what's wrong with faith on the off chance that someone comes along and thinks, "Yeah, that really is nuts."

I have some family activities planned today, and won't be able to address your full post right now, but I do want to state that it is completely intellectually dishonest to compare the perils of the LDS religion to pedophilia and the KKK. If you really cannot distinguish that, then I don't know that there is much further to discuss. The only points you scored high on was hyperbole.

Well, the comparison with the KKK at least is fairly apt. Until recently the church taught that blacks were inferior.

So, is your position that all religions, which you deem as harmful be banned from the US?

I wouldn't make the criterion "which I deem harmful." Before we were to undertake such an activity, I think we'd be obligated to show exactly how each faith tenet is harmful with empirical data.

I also don't think you necessarily have to ban all religions; just the tenets of faith that are harmful. I would call for a major reformation of all religions, although I'm not sure that it wouldn't result in the abolishment of all religions as we now know them.

But I'm not going to lie to you; it has long been my position that the human race would be better off basing their life on a more realistic worldview and without religion. I don't think it's benefits (which I won't deny exist) justify its downside, nor do I think the benefits are unobtainable outside a religious context.

So, okay, I clicked on the Barry Manilow's MANDY
Hilarious. On the other suggested videos was Three Dog Night
That was cool. Seemed like we always put the Dog on after a few beers back in High School

They performed great at the Denver Rock Festival in 1969 at Mile High Stadium
After Jimi Hendrix was a total bomb, (he was on a bummer because that was the last time his group was ever going to play together) the promoters had to bring back Three Dog Night who stole the show the first time they performed so the crowd did not demolish the stadium. We were already getting tear gassed because people were trying to break in. Nobody checked the wind direction before they laid down the gas.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be watching some more TDN videos.

Look, there are tenets of the LDS faith that I don't agree with, either. You should know that by now. ;-)

I just disagree with "throwing out the baby with the bath water".

A reformation of ALL religion is a pretty big project. I don't know that it could realistically be done. However, I do respect your position on this because it's consistent.

I would use the correct spelling in your case.
