by the way, the Church is much kinder than this. Sometimes questionable thoughts make it to print, but where are the editors? That is the trouble when worship and fear of reprisal happen conjointly in the same book publishing company.

This is a true statement. No one will repent of anything unless they realize they have done something wrong and that always entails suffering. The question is, how much suffering does it take for you to repent? For some, not much, for others, it never ends.

I know of people who have been disciplined in the church who have been told by their leaders that they have not "suffered" enough for what they did and cannot get back in full fellowship until they have somehow proved to the bishop that they have...suffered enough. Well, what is suffering enough? In one case this was for pre-marital sex that had happened over a decade previous with the persons current spouse!

And this gross distortion of moral perspective is what we get in a church claiming to be filled with the spirit of God. How does that work exactly?

That's exactly what it is. When non-marital sex is described as being "next to murder" in seriousness, something is seriously amiss. Having sex is worse than abusing a child or stealing from widows? Definitely a distorted moral perspective.
