I'd hardly call the marriages of Partridge sisters (wives 20 and 21) to be the "initial period." Joseph Smith had been practicing plural marriage for almost two years by then.
You can claim nothing "sinister" by the hiding because various other people were involved in ALL the sealings, including family members, fathers, mothers, etc.
