I agree. I don't think Dan would ever knowingly do something illegal. I realize he should have known, given he was once a bishop. But I think what happened here is in his zeal to expose Everybody Wang Chung, he just went for it, without stopping to think about the consequences. Why his bishop/friend agreed to it is beyond my comprehension, unless he is also someone who obsessively reads this board, and thus, was as worked up and angry about Everybody Wang Chung's bishop pretense as Dan was.

Are you asking BC to comment on whether:
1. this is church doctrine? (hint: more than 1 GA has to access the db in public more than 1 time)
2. there is a 'god' mode for db access?
3. the church db has a soul/could sin/was human before the fall?
4. db access is a liberal or a god's party (republican) function?

What makes you think Dan believed him? Clearly he did not. Those who actually took the bait; hook, line and sinker were the posters here at MDB who defended Everybody Wang Chung's claim to be a Bishop and got upset with those of us who questioned him!

If Everybody Wang Chung trolled anyone it was some of his fellow posters here at Mormondiscussions.

That's laughable. Dan is the only one who took the bait and in real life tried to verify if Everybody Wang Chung is or is not a bishop.

I just Googled "LDS bishop's database", and this is what came up ranked second: https://cdol.LDS.org/cdol/security/login.jsf One of the questions is whether one wants to register "for an LDS account". My understanding is that even non-Mormon media employees can register.

When you go to the "conditions of use" agreement (before signing up), this is what appears: https://cdol.LDS.org/cdol/outsideConditionsOfUse.jsf

You may view, download, and print material from this site only for your
personal, noncommercial use directly related to your work for The Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (whether as a volunteer, as part
of a Church calling, or as a paid employee of an affiliated legal
entity)
.
(Emphasis added)

The latter would seem to me to include non-Mormons, and media representatives.

Foreign Transfer of Data

When you submit information through this Web site your act is an
affirmative act indicating informed consent to the processing of that
information, as well as informed consent to allow the transborder
transfer of that information to countries with less restrictive data
protection laws than the country of your residence, including transfers
to the United States, for the purposes of facilitating communication
among Church leaders and with Church employees.
If you submit any information about yourself or others, including information inferring or demonstrating religious beliefs, affiliations, or practices, you alone
are responsible for the consequences of making this transfer of personal
information.
(Emphasis added)

This is what comes up if you wish to register as Non-LDS. It may not show up unless you go through the steps from the first link I gave. https://ldsaccount.LDS.org/sign-in/go/p ... ionId=7359

That already opens up a potential can of worms, noting that the information gathered may be posted in "countries with less restrictive data protection laws than the country of your residence". So those who run the website are only protecting themselves from prosecution, not imposing limits on those who have access to the information on the site. This doesn't at all sound as "closed and confidential" to me as most are making it out to be, and certainly not something "only LDS bishops" or Church leaders have access to.

Non-Mormon/member media personnel may post information "for the purposes of facilitating communication among Church leaders and with Church employees." In other words, outside feedback.

This is anything but a kind of "closed" "bishop's only" "secret enclave" of information.

Alter Idem, are you going address why a list of church leadership personal contact I.e. home address and home number are not confidential but as you assert general membership records are confidential.

How about that, Ray? If that was where Peterson was having his bishop friend cross-check third party commercial data, then it makes no sense at all for Peterson to need to go to a bishop friend to access it for him.

I wonder why we keep seeing things like terms of use, disclaimers of warranties, choice of law and choice of forum clauses, limitations of liability, and so on, when this whole issue is just a matter of the "spirit of the law" about people just kind of doing whatever they want about a totally ecclesiastical affair.

Danpologetics is the Sea Org of Mormontology. Expect many more stories. These folks are dedicated.
