I think your argument Schmo is that if enough people shame some behavior it will significantly decrease how many people misbehave.
Think of it this way. Christians have been shaming unwed mothers and divorce for quite some time. Has the number of single mothers increased or decreased over time? What about the divorce rate? The right has been shaming people who like to be stoned all the time? How many people refrain from getting drunk or getting high over this? What about disability fraudsters and tax cheats? Do you really think they give a rip if I think what they're doing is shameful?
Shame is such a weak motivational force. People need to understand why these things are in their best interest.
