If you had the power to do so, what part or parts of the Constitution would you change?Physics Guy wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 1:39 pmThe American system of government is Democracy 1.0, a wonderful new product when first introduced but lagging the field badly now. I don't believe any other nation is currently running a copy of it. The separation of powers seems to have been overdone, in hindsight, and the balanced bicameral legislature, with both chambers powerful, creates too much deadlock. Simply having to face the electorate every few years has proven to be enough of a bulwark against tyranny that we can safely let elected governments get things done more easily. Unfortunately, fear of power in the 1.0 era also made it hard to change the clunky system in future, and so the US is stuck.

While I can't speak for Physics Guy, his thinking seems similar to mine. For reasons I discussed here, I would have the president be elected by popular vote instead of the Electoral College; have a maximum population size for House districts (at minimum, no district can be more populous than the least populous state); either have term limits and regular-interval appointments for Supreme Court justices or have them sit as panels on individual cases instead of the same set of justices ruling on every case; and either eliminate the Senate or strip it of its role in passing legislation, limiting it to confirming appointments (and doing so in such a way that it can't just sit on an appointment and let it expire).Dr. Shades wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 4:25 pmIf you had the power to do so, what part or parts of the Constitution would you change?Physics Guy wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 1:39 pmThe American system of government is Democracy 1.0, a wonderful new product when first introduced but lagging the field badly now. A Voting Rights constitutional amendment to ensure that every citizen has a right to vote and be free from suppression, reinforcing the constitutional basis for national protections would be a start. I’d consolidate the 15th, 19th, 24th, and 25th amendments into a universal amendment that lays out voting guarantees for everyon above a certain age, and implementing the legal and procedural guarantees to ensure everyone has easy and convenient access to voting.Dr. Looks like Dick Cheney just wiped his ass, and dumped Trump. What a crazy election year.

It's a strange feeling to be supporting the same candidate as one of the most evil political figures in American politics. Crazy indeed.Doctor CamNC4Me wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 8:38 pmLooks like Dick Cheney just wiped his ass, and dumped Trump. What a crazy election year.

Well, okay, I guess. I like facts, not conclusions.

He said he is voting for Harris, but Cheney might want to invite Trump on a hunting trip.
