Joseph Smith’s translation of the Book of Mormon aimed to make ancient texts accessible within the intellectual and linguistic framework known to early 19th-century readers, while also restoring lost or clarified meanings. As I've already said Joseph Smith's translation was not a typical linguistic translation but rather a revelatory process that produced English that would be familiar and understandable to early 19th-century readers, thus knowingly using KJV language as a framework while adding inspired clarifications or variants. In addition, Joseph Smith's translation text aligns with ancient biblical texts and includes Hebraisms unknown in his time. This acts as evidence against simple KJV plagiarism or careless copying.

In reference to your word usage concern the words "beasts, islands, and dragons" were part of the common biblical vocabulary passed down through the KJV tradition. If Smith had translated with a focus on conveying the exact ancient zoological or geographical referents (like "hyenas" or "jackals"), the text might have seemed foreign or obscure to his readers. Joseph was writing for our day. His audience was 19th century Bible readers and believers. In today's parlance and meaning of Biblical/Book of Mormon text most folks don't take issue with the "appropriate translation".
Why...would [MG] post "Joseph was writing for our day", followed immediately by "his audience was 19th century Bible readers and believers"?

Was mg was born in the 1800s?
Our day meaning the modern reader. Those that lived in the 19th century are not that far separated from us. I'm talking in scriptural lingo and timelines. Is there something that I said that you either support and/or disagree with?

You didn't quote the last line of my post:
Folks like yourself do though! And you can get twisted in knots.
If the shoe fits?

I'm afraid your idea (A.I.?) is not entirely supported by Smith's narrative of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. The aim of his translation in dealing with biblical ancient text was not only meant for those living in his region and time but was "Written to the Lamanites, who are a remnant of the house of Israel; and also to Jew and Gentile." Or in other words, the account of Isaiah that was alleged to be recorded on gold plates was for EVERYONE, especially the Jews who should anticipate an exact reading of what's in their own volume of scripture passed down through the ages. THAT is what Smith alleged to translate!

But what do the Jews get?

Garbage from the KJV!

You're toast, MG.

Wasn't the Book of Mormon written for Jew and Gentile? There are a number of things that the Book of Mormon gives to the Jews in regard to further light and knowledge as to their purpose in the landscape of salvific history. They are in no way left out. The Book of Mormon reminds the Jewish people that they remain God's ancient covenant people and that the gathering of Israel is part of the latter day work that God will and has initiated on earth. Somewhere in the Book of Mormon it says that the Bible being brought forth by the Jews acts as a companion to the Book of Mormon and they work together in providing the scriptural sourcing/backing to encourage believers to follow Jesus Christ.

You remind me of professor Joe's "revelatory process" of the Book of Abraham in which racist English speaking people might fully expect the poor black guy (Anubis) in Facsimile No. 3 is nothing more than a slave with his face hacked to bits! How's that for clarification or variants?

Joe's God should have known the Book of Mormon was hardly written for 19th century people because very few people living in that century ever read the book! But here we are in the 21st century and we expect professionalism from God! We get neither in the Book of Mormon or the Book Abraham!

The Book of Mormon is a reminder that white people can be very racist.

The Jews are not interested in bowing their knees to the brethren who run a cult in Salt Lake City.

The Jews are not interested in converting to the Christian religion.

LOL! It's too bad the Jews do not accept the Book of Mormon as scripture. In fact, if a Jew has even heard of the Book of Mormon, they most likely view it on par with L. Ron Hubbard's writings.

LOL! This statement implies that the Book of Mormon offers a more complete understanding of Jewish salvific history than what is found in their own scriptures (the Hebrew Bible/Tanakh) or their own theological traditions. Jews would find this claim to be utterly offensive and ridiculous.

LOL! Why would Jewish people feel left out without the Book of Mormon? What a stupid argument, MG.
MG wrote:The Book of Mormon reminds the Jewish people that they remain God's ancient covenant people and that the gathering of Israel is part of the latter day work that God will and has initiated on earth.
LOL! The gathering of Israel discussed in the Book of Mormon is viewed through a distinctly Mormon perspective/lens, which includes belief in Joseph Smith as a prophet, the restoration of the church, and a different understanding of the Messiah than traditional Judaism. The gathering of Israel discussed in the Book of Mormon is tied to accepting Jesus Christ as the Messiah, which is a completely offensive departure from traditional Jewish beliefs about their covenant and future.

LOL! From a Jewish perspective, their Bible (the Tanakh) is a complete and sufficient revelation of God's will and covenants.

Give Shulem a break!

Tricky Hebraisms are smoke and mirror apologetics and can't possibly save the faulty translations of the KJV that Nephi copied into the gold plates! That is dishonest Mormon apologetics on your part, MG. Where the hell is the BYP when you need him? Jesus Christ.

Who the hell are you trying to kid, MG? Do yo think I'm stupid? I'm Doctor Shulem! I am brilliant beyond your ability to comprehend.

Joe's KJV translations do not align with ancient biblical text. They are two separate classes and contradict each other. Look, do Joe's translations of the hieroglyphic text in Facsimile No. 3 align with the ancient Egyptians?
  • Fig. 2. King Pharaoh, whose name is given in the characters above his head.
  • Fig. 4. Prince of Pharaoh, King of Egypt, as written above the hand.
  • Fig. 5. Shulem, one of the king’s principal waiters, as represented by the characters above his hand.
