Unlike his response to Nelson, which I would describe as “blank”, the Pope seemed to really enjoy meeting Whoopi Goldberg.Marcus wrote: ↑Fri Aug 29, 2025 9:49 pmI read about Nelson's visit to the Pope in my relative's Catholic newsletter. For the Pope, it was a very minor event, squeezed in next to a visit from a cyclist who had won a race in Europe recently. It didn't sound like the Pope knew who Nelson was any more than he knew who the cyclist was. They were just on his schedule as extremely brief visits, back to back, by people wanting to honor the Pope. The Pope was always extremely gracious in his visits with numerous people, according to this newsletter.I Have Questions wrote: ↑Fri Aug 29, 2025 6:57 pmOne wonders why Nelson didn’t denounce the Pope and his cardinals to their faces. Rather than cowardly taking passive aggressive cheap shots in their direction from the safety of a conference room full of yes men and yes women.

Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

Mormons criticise and demean the idea of missionary work if someone is doing it to them. It’s very much an intellectually dishonest stance.Mag’ladroth wrote: ↑Fri Aug 29, 2025 11:23 amI mean it’s right there in every single conference talk about how every church doesn’t have authority and is the church of the devil because they don’t spend millions on temples for plagiarized Masonic rituals mixed with Joseph’s Bible fan fiction.I Have Questions wrote: ↑Fri Aug 29, 2025 7:05 amI find it fascinating that Mormons can criticise people for giving advice to others about leaving their religion when that religion is Mormonism, but will cheer on their missionaries and laud any success when they give advice to people about leaving their religion in favour of joining Mormonism.
It’s a clear double standard. It’s blatant hypocrisy. But they don’t see it.
But in a more charitable read, hypocrisy is ok as long as it serves the church and its goals. I’m sure you can pick examples.

I would expect that within the bounds of decorum and decency President Nelson and other church authorities share their testimonies of Christ and if prompted to also bear witness of the Book of Mormon and its witness of Christ. I believe they share copies of the Book of Mormon when it is acceptable/warranted in any given situation.I Have Questions wrote: ↑Sat Aug 30, 2025 8:12 amWhy hasn’t President Nelson been able to convince a single solitary other Church leader that they are mistaken and should join the SLC LDS Church. Has he even tried? And if not, why hasn’t he? He expects members to try and convert their neighbours and work colleagues.Mag’ladroth wrote: ↑Fri Aug 29, 2025 11:26 pmWouldn’t the Pope know he was in the presence of the only authoritative priesthood holder on Earth? Didn’t the Pope see “the light in his eyes”?![]()

Mormonism looks like a weird sideshow compared to the Christian church that has existed for 2000 years.MG 2.0 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 30, 2025 5:19 pmI would expect that within the bounds of decorum and decency President Nelson and other church authorities share their testimonies of Christ and if prompted to also bear witness of the Book of Mormon and its witness of Christ. I don’t think that is true in every case. Many members, and full time missionaries, are willing (more so nowadays) to listen to the life experiences and beliefs of others and learn from them.I Have Questions wrote: ↑Sat Aug 30, 2025 8:34 amMormons criticise and demean the idea of missionary work if someone is doing it to them. I am completely open to listening to you explain your worldview and what makes you tick, IHQ. The problem is that you are unwilling to share. Just criticize.
