They've been at sea with no breaks for 8 months, the ship has had various malfunctions such as water contamination, care packages from home have been lost or significantly delayed in transit, they've had NO breaks to go ashore, reports are that morale is in the tank and one seaman/sailor recently jumped off the ship and was rescued...think that was last week.Physics Guy wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2026 1:49 pmWhat is up with the USS Abraham Lincoln? She's one of ten Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and has been in service for nearly forty years, so the US Navy should know how to operate her. Plus she's one of ten Nimitz-class aircraft carriers in the US Navy. This is the organisation that is supposed to be able to project power around the globe, and these are the units that are supposed to do the projecting. You'd think that the entire resources of a superpower would be deployed to keep the USS AL going properly, or else that the admirals would long since have swapped it out for another of the eleven US carriers, for maintenance and to rest the crew.
Keeping its soldiers and sailors well supplied with food and amenities has been a hallmark of the US military since at least World War II. Heroic endurance on starvation rations was for other people; American forces always had an unusually large rear-echelon component that reliably delivered supplies and comforts in quantities that amazed their enemies. Those enemies only wished that this was because Americans were soft; everyone can be tough if they have to be, but people who are better supplied can fight better. The scale and effectiveness of the American military supply and maintenance system was an advantage that won battles and wars.
Now there are reports that the crew of an American aircraft carrier have been short of food. Leaders back in Washington deny the claims, but not with livestreams from happy sailors on the Abraham Lincoln chowing down on a feast, or even with video testimony from Navy moms saying they'd just heard from their sons about how great the food is. What is going on? Has the US Navy fallen apart?
There's another US naval ship on the way from China to switch out with the Lincoln. Apparently our ships need recurring and regular maintenance which I think I heard the Lincoln was in need of. And I think that the commentary I listened to said there were 11 of this kind.
What happened to the Navy? Probably better to ask what happened to the US.
ETA: Looked up the inventory. You were right. There are 10 of these same aircraft carriers.
Never served. Never deployed. Never worn the uniform. Doesn't know what a deployment is. Doesn't care.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Friday downplayed the toll on American sailors enduring a record-setting deployment of nearly nine months on the USS Abraham Lincoln as concerns escalated about mental health and supply issues aboard the aircraft carrier supporting U.S. operations against Iran.
In a brief exchange with reporters before flying to New York for an event to highlight falling violent crime rates across the U.S., Trump refuted that family members have raised concerns about the deployment’s length and even said that the more than 260-day deployment is “not nearly long enough.”
“That ship is moving right now, or very shortly, and it’s being replaced with another very similar ship,” Trump said when asked about the lengthy deployment.
The Lincoln has been supporting the U.S. war against Iran, and several Democratic lawmakers, including Sens. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Ruben Gallego of Arizona, are pressing for accountability from the Pentagon over conditions aboard the carrier, which Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday said were “completely misrepresented.”
Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo., who served three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division and 75th Ranger Regiment before being elected, took to social media to criticize Trump’s comments, saying on X that “President Trump does not care about our servicemembers or their families.”
Extended deployments of carriers during the Iran conflict have raised concerns about the impact on service members who are away from home for long periods as well as the increasing strain on the ship and its equipment.
