The word "desperately" in the sentence is an expression of Kimmel's opinion. You may disagree with his opinion. But the expression of an opinion is not a "lie" simply because you don't agree with it.

In my opinion, "desperate" is a reasonable description of the immediate waving of the bloody shirt by MAGA politicians and influencers before they knew anything about Tyler. Your disagreement with my opinion does not make either of us liars. This is the crazy thing about Kimmel’s indefinite suspension. After two very respectful comments on the tragic murder of Charlie Kirk, Kimmel correctly described the mad scramble, sans evidence, of MAGA pundits and pols to characterize Tyler Robinson as a radical leftist. Note that Kimmel’s “offensive” comments were not about Charlie Kirk at all. Kimmel was instead laying bare the use of Kirk’s sad murder to provoke further division in our country. That was Kimmel’s sin, not behaving disrespectfully regarding Kirk’s horrible murder, but describing the use of this tragedy to further a political agenda—aggravating polarization between MAGA and the rest of the country.

The truth of Kimmel’s dismissal is that Trump wanted it, and Kirk’s awful murder provided Brendan Carr the chance to lick Trump’s boot by making it happen. How did he do it? He dangled the Nexstar merger as something that could take place—against anti-monopoly regs—if Nexstar helped get Kimmel off the air.
